In recent years, home health care has emerged as a revolutionary approach to healthcare, offering a multitude of benefits and solutions for individuals seeking personalized care in the comfort of their own homes. With advancements in technology, an aging population, and a growing desire for patient-centric care, home health care has become an increasingly popular and viable option. In this blog post, we will explore the transformative power of home health care, highlighting its advantages, the services it provides, and its impact on the overall well-being of patients and their families.

1. Personalized Care at Home:
Home health care brings healthcare services directly to the doorstep of patients, allowing them to receive personalized care tailored to their specific needs and preferences. Whether it’s managing chronic conditions, post-operative care, or assistance with daily activities, home health care professionals deliver individualized attention, fostering a deep sense of comfort and familiarity.

2. Independence and Familiarity:
One of the most significant advantages of home health care is the preservation of independence and the promotion of a familiar environment. Aging or recovering individuals can maintain their daily routines, surrounded by cherished memories and possessions, which plays a crucial role in their emotional well-being. This continuity of care empowers patients to actively participate in their own recovery and maintain a higher quality of life.

3. Enhanced Safety and Reduced Risks:
Home health care minimizes exposure to healthcare-associated infections often found in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. By receiving care in the familiar surroundings of their own homes, patients reduce the risk of contracting infections, while maintaining a higher level of control over their environments. Additionally, home health care providers conduct comprehensive assessments to identify and address potential safety hazards, making the home environment safer for patients.

4. Holistic Approach to Health:
Home health care professionals emphasize a holistic approach to health, recognizing the interconnectedness of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. These professionals work closely with patients and their families to develop personalized care plans that encompass a wide range of services, including medical care, medication management, rehabilitation therapies, nutritional support, and emotional counseling. By addressing all aspects of a patient’s health, home health care providers promote comprehensive wellness and long-term recovery.

5. Emotional Support for Patients and Families:
Home health care not only benefits patients but also provides much-needed support for their families and caregivers. Caring for a loved one can be physically and emotionally demanding, often leading to burnout. Home health care professionals offer respite for family caregivers, allowing them time for self-care and reducing the burden of round-the-clock care. Moreover, by providing education and guidance, home health care teams empower families to actively participate in the care process, fostering a sense of confidence and peace of mind.

6. Cost-Effective and Efficient:
Home health care is often a more cost-effective alternative to prolonged hospital stays or nursing home care. By avoiding hospital admissions or reducing the length of stay, patients can significantly reduce their medical expenses. Additionally, home health care providers optimize the delivery of services, ensuring efficient use of resources and minimizing unnecessary procedures.

Home health care is a transformative approach to healthcare that empowers individuals to receive personalized care in the comfort of their own homes. With its emphasis on patient-centric services, preservation of independence, and holistic well-being, home health care has the potential to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. As the demand for individualized and compassionate care continues to grow, home health care is set to play an increasingly vital role in the future of healthcare, fostering independence, and promoting well-being for all.

Just a glance up from your computer screen will remind you of your surroundings. If you’re reading this at home, you’ll probably see pictures of grandchildren, brothers, sisters, parents, pets….family. You’ll see momentoes that spark memories of love, victory and faith. There isn’t even a thought of leaving these familiar surroundings for an extended stay in a hospital or some sort of long-term care facility.

But…reality lingers. Health needs loom large and it is increasingly difficult to manage without the procedure or without assistance. The idea of leaving the place that has been home for decades is unthinkable. Are there any other options?

We’re glad you asked. Maya Homecare goes beyond helping people with simple activities of daily living. We have registered nurses on staff who can provide assistance that most home care agencies are unable to do. Hospitals can provide that necessary advanced care, but the option of staying home and receiving the same care would seem to be more appealing.

If you want to compare costs, there can’t be specifics without specifics, but you can count on care at home being close to 50% cheaper than going to a medical facility for an extended period. Maybe there will be a time when that move is necessary, but Maya Homecare might be able to give you more time to heal and recover in the comfort of your own home. Contact us at 908.264.0021 to talk about your needs and how we can help.

He was loyal…devoted to his country. He became upset when Old Glory hanging outside of the assisted living facility was faded and starting to tear. He was cognizant…he was alert…he was independent…yet his family placed him into an assisted living facility against his better judgment.

Did he need to be there? Had he been lonely? Was he such a danger to himself that the family was willing to pay the much higher price of putting their father in a home as opposed to staying in his own home?

These are questions that families and their loved ones wrestle with when things begin to change with age-related issues. Naturally, there are pros and cons to being in a facility as there are for staying in familiar surroundings where one is comfortable and relaxed. Here are some of those advantages of having an aide come from Maya Homecare to assist you or your loved one:

COST: The price difference has already been mentioned above, so we’ll start there. In NJ, assisted living facilities can START at $4500 per MONTH…and that’s usually if you are independent and don’t need assistance with anything! You can probably tack on an additional $1200+/month if he/she needs help with medications. Any care that is provided has an additional cost, which usually increases as time marches on and more help is required. Of course, you can count on annual increases to rent and services like most businesses do, but they can jump higher than average cost of living in AL facilities.

ONE ROOM: It’s tough for anyone who has to move from their spacious homes and consolidate their entire life into one room…maybe two depending on how much extra you’re willing to pay for a luxury apartment in assisted living. Tough choices will have to be made as to what furniture will go into the AL room you have rented…which usually boils down to a bed, dresser, nightstand, couch, chair, TV and maybe a table for two if you can find room for it. It’s a very stressful time to make big decisions such as these, not as much as what you will take with you, but more as to what you will leave behind or sell or send to the dump.

PERSONAL TOUCH: In assisted living facilities, there are generally 3-4 aides who provide care for the residents. The ratio is supposed to be around 1:8 caregiver to residents, but you will find most facilities are vastly understaffed for one reason or another. Now, these caregivers work hard and a lot of times don’t even get a break during their entire shift. Some of these amazing people work double-shifts to help cover the shortages and make sure the residents are cared for, but the ratio tends to rest at 1:15, depending on levels of care…one aide for 15 residents who each need help with showers, grooming, toileting, getting dressed and moving about the community. The time doesn’t always add up like it does if you have one aide who comes to your home to take care of YOU or your loved one. Their attention is not divided. They are dedicated to care for one person.

There may come a time when a person requires the care needed in an assisted living facility or a nursing home, but there are some clear advantages to bringing in an aide from Maya Homecare. They get to know you and your loved one, they get to know what they like or (sometimes more importantly) DON’T like and they can work closely with you to ensure a positive experience in your own home. Call us today at 908.264.0021 to move forward in this part of the journey.

People LOVE to give advice, even when we don’t ask for it, right? For people who are getting older, or for their loved ones who witness them getting older, good advice can be helpful. The question is, who do you trust? What’s best for me or my mom/dad?

Sometimes the aging process is rough and a lot of times it can seem unfair. Some older folks may be restricted by family or doctors in what activities they can do, while their best friends are still independent with driving and living in their own homes. Life is precious and should be valued at ALL ages. It’s only natural to keep that in mind while contemplating next steps if assistance is required. One of the most important things for seniors is to continue living in their own home. This is where you are most familiar with things, this is where your memories are, this is where you do your daily routine, this is where people come to visit…this is HOME.

Sadly, it feels like the body betrays us at times and we start to forget things or we need help with things we didn’t need help with before. So, is it an automatic decision to pack up and move to an assisted living facility while? No, of course not. There is nothing automatic about that decision. Some people may need that level of care, BUT if someone can come help them at certain strategic times of the day, the rush into senior living starts to slow down.

The biggest advantage to having an aide come to your home is that they come to YOUR HOME. You can still hang on to your routines and your memories by having a home health aide or even a nurse come to you to address those care needs. For those who may need care at home, Maya Homecare has professionals to stay part of the day or longer. It all depends on the need.

If you’re considering where to go from here, contact Maya Homecare at 908.264.0021 to discuss options. It’s that first step that will lead to the next steps.

Home health care is a whole new world for some people. Maybe you are someone who is starting to feel the effects of aging…things just aren’t as easy to do as they were just a year or two ago. Perhaps you are a family member who has been witness to one of your parents getting older at a faster pace than you’d expect. You’re starting to think that they may need some help to continue to live that independent life.

As you explore options for additional care, you’ll notice the acronym of “ADLs” being used quite frequently. The letters A, D and L stand for “Activities of Daily Living.” Although the term “activities” may sound like fun, they really are just the regular routines everyone has as they get ready for the day and as they prepare for bedtime. Generally there are six or seven common ADLs that are covered in an assessment…

Mobility – Are you able to move around independently or do you need the assistance of a medical device such as a cane, walker or wheelchair?

Transferring – Is one able to get in and out of chairs/bed alone or is assistance required?

Showers/Bathing – Sometimes as you get older, it may be harder to reach certain spots to clean or it may even be challenging to stand for extended amounts of time. Does this person need a shower chair? grab bars?

Personal Hygiene – Grooming, shaving, hair care, oral care, etc…

Toileting – This may include getting on and off the toilet, cleaning and getting re-dressed.

Dressing – Yes, sometimes people have trouble getting those arms and legs into their clothing and may need some help.

Eating – Needing assistance with dining isn’t as common as some of these others, but it’s something professionals like to include in the assessment. As one ages, appetites sometimes decrease and meals are overlooked. Well, to maintain our best health possible, we still need to eat three square meals a day…and maybe some goodies thrown
in for good measure. (We all have our vices!)

So, now you know what people are talking about when you hear those letters being tossed around in a conversation…ADLs, ADLs, ADLs…Activities of Daily Living.

Just a bit of advice…be honest with yourself or your loved one during an assessment. Although it may be difficult, seniors really need to step back and take a hard look at themselves along their needs. Too often, you’ll hear people say the familiar phrases such as, “I don’t need help with that,” or “I can do that on my own.” If we aren’t willing to admit that maybe we could use a little help, it could be dangerous to one’s health. So, help the pros out and let them help you through this part of life’s journey. You won’t regret getting a little help with your ADLs.

As the holiday season approaches, our Registered Nurses at Maya Homecare want to share some helpful tips on staying healthy. The hustle and bustle of the holidays can leave us feeling tired and spent, but if you follow our useful tips below you are sure to stay happy and healthy during the most wonderful time of the year.

1. Wash your heads frequently!

Visits and outings with family and friends make us more vulnerable to catching a bug and getting sick. That’s why it is very important to keep the germs away. There is nothing worse than getting sick while the family is in town. Washing your hands is the easiest and most sure way to prevent getting sick. Make sure you spend at least 20 seconds washing your hands! A quick rinse is not going to get rid of all the bacteria. When soap and water is not available, you should use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and rub it for 20 seconds as well.

2. Drink plenty of water.

With all the buzz and activities of the holiday season it is easy to forget to stay hydrated. We often forget to drink water, and on top of that often enjoy a couple of drinks. Our favorite comfort foods are also often high in sodium, which only adds to the dehydration. There are a couple of ways to make sure you are staying hydrated. Setting an hourly reminder on your phone can be useful to help you remember to drink a glass of water every hour. Another tip is to follow each alcoholic drink with a glass of water, which helps to prevent dehydration. Cutting down on comfort foods such as mac and cheese, pizza, chips and popcorn can aid in preventing dehydration as well.

3. Keep your regular sleep schedule.

During the holidays we are tempted to stay up late with our friends and family. However, disruptions to your regular sleep schedule can cause serious negative consequences for your health. Irregular sleep schedule leads to disruption in our metabolism, decreased focus and bad mood. That’s why is very important to go to bed at the same time every night and to get at least 7 hours of sleep. One way to accomplish that is to schedule family and friend gatherings earlier in the evening. Taking advantage of daytime holiday activities instead of late night gatherings is another way to ensure you go to bed at a reasonable time. Another tip is to plan and follow a schedule of all the tasks that need to be done throughout the day, instead of trying to crunch everything into late evening hours.

The entire team at Maya Homecare wishes you a happy holiday season filled with joy. Stay safe and healthy!
